Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Monday announced that the ministry had set up a directorate to address learners with special needs in different schools across the country.
Speaking during a public forum in Nairobi, Matiang'i divulged that a director will be appointed in January to spearhead the department and make sure needs of special learners are addressed.
“The government recognises the rights of learners with disabilities as enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution (2010),” Dr Matiang’i stated.
The Education CS added that more money would be channelled to special schools to improve the infrastructure and provide learners with a conducive environment to study.
A total of 1,950 special-needs candidates sat their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam in 2016 with the highest scoring 421 marks.
Among them, 63 were given an opportunity to join regular schools of their choice across the country.
The top candidate in KCPE 2016, Victor Odhiambo, happened to be from a special school in Kakamega County and scored 437 marks.
