MCA's Threaten to Camp Farmers at State House

Kakamega Members of County Assembly (MCAs) have put President Uhuru Kenyatta, threatening to facilitate the transportation of sugarcane farmers to Nairobi and have them camp at the state house.

They have given President Kenyatta an ultimatum of one week to meet their demands, failure to which they will make good their threat.

The county legislators want Uhuru to withdraws the alleged sugar trade pact with his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni.

Speaking at a hotel in Kisumu the MCAs, led by the county assembly majority leader -Robert Makhanu- the leaders condemned the deal saying it was unfair to sugar cane farmers in the country.

They further condemned MPs from Nyanza and Western regions who they allege are in support of the sugar deal and accused them of being compromised and sell-outs who are ready to abandon their people for selfish gains.

Claims of the controversial sugar deal was first made by opposition leader Raila Odinga who accused the government of signing an agreement between Kenya and Uganda that will allow cheaper Ugandan sugar into the Kenyan market.

The government, however, denial all reports of having signed a sugar deal.

Leaders from Nyanza and Western regions have maintained that the alleged deal exists, and faulting it saying it could kill the local sugar industry which supports 500, 000 people directly and one million people indirectly.
