Medical Student Shot Near University

A medical student at University of Nairobi is recuperating in the Intensive Care Unit after being shot by thugs on Sunday night on his way home from night duty.

The student, who was attached at Kenyatta National Hospital, was walking from the facility when he was accosted by an armed thug who demanded for cash and other valuables.

Confirming the incident, Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said that a confrontation ensued after which the gunman shot the student in the abdomen.

After the incident, which happened at Matumbatu area near Strathmore University, the robber reportedly escaped on foot without stealing anything.

The student was said to be in a stable condition after undergoing an operation to remove a bullet that ruptured his kidney.

The shooting elicited reactions from the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union Secretary-General Dr Ouma Oluga, who complained over doctors' safety.

“We have had three such shooting incidents affecting doctors heading to work or leaving. We want our security to be guaranteed as we struggle to ensure patients are well,” he was quoted by the Standard.

He further urged that they be provided with enough security for those involved in night duties.

“We will rally members countrywide to stop night duties until secured transport is assured by all hospitals,” Nairobi News quoted Dr Oluga.

On Wednesday, residents of Gachie area in Kiambu County took to the streets to decry insecurity after a doctor was shot by unkown thugs while heading to work.

Dr Mary Wambui was shot at 2am as she rushed to Kihara Sub-District Hospital to attend to an emergency call.
