Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho Supporters Clash with Heavily Armed GSU Officers

Heavily armed police officers were today engaged in a stand-off with supporters of Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho after they were barred from entering the Coast Regional Police headquarters.

Drama started after hundreds of supporters flanking Governor Joho to the police headquarters to record a statement were refused entry by a contingent of anti-riot officers.

Tension arose after the rowdy group were reportedly told to disperse and only allow the governor into the premises.

Joho, however, adamantly refused and demanded he be allowed in together with other leaders among them Siaya Senator James Orengo, Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, MPs Abdulswamad Nasir (Mvita), Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni), Badi Twalib (Jomvu) and Mishi Mboko (Woman Rep).

The supporters insisted that they must escort the Governor right into the headquarters forcing the police to swing into action.

Joho had been summoned by the police to record a statement over claims that his KCSE certificate was a forgery after the national examinations body disowned his result slip.

In a letter directed to the Director of Criminal Investigations, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) had alleged that Joho’s 1992 result slip that he used to gain admission to the University of Nairobi was forged.

He, however, dismissed the claims as a vain attempt by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s henchmen who were using state machinery to intimidate him over his spat with the head of state.

Joho had on Tuesday the 28th stated that he will honour the CID summons and will be vindicated but will not be deterred in his resolve to fight for the agenda of his people.
