MP Charged With Stealing Wheelbarrows

A Member of Parliament (MP) was on Monday morning arraigned in court and charged with theft and malicious damage to property.

Nakuru East MP David Gikaria was accused of leading protesters who destroyed property worth Sh7 Million belonging to a local company.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate David Kemei, the legislator was also charged with stealing 30 wheelbarrows and other goods valued at Sh2 Million.

According to the prosecution, Gikaria together with other protesters participated in bringing down a perimeter wall of a disputed land belonging to the company.

The 10-acre land is believed to be at the centre of controversy between members of the public and a former Nakuru Mayor who claims ownership of the property.

Mr Gikaria was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000 and an alternative of Sh500,000 bond. The case will resume on June 20.

Last month, Kitui Rural MP Charles Nyamai was charged with obtaining goods worth Sh7 Million from a businessman through pretence.

Nyamai, who already had a warrant of arrest against him, presented himself before the court and was freed on a Sh500,000 bond and a surety of the same after asking for an out-of-court settlement of the matter.
