MPs 'Fight' Over Electricity Cut in Parliament

Two Members of Parliament on Wednesday got into a fierce argument over power blackout at parliament buildings that lasted for three days.

Eldas MP Adan Keynan and Runyenjes MP Cecily Mbarire locked horns on the floor of the House over last weeks' electricity cut in parliament that was caused by failure to pay dues.

Mbarire criticised the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) for allowing the bill to accumulate and further expressed discontentment with the commission.

“We should not discuss the power disconnection on the floor of the House. Why did the commission wait for the bill to accumulate and then come here to tell us why it has not been paid? I have been in this House for a while and I can tell you this commission has issues,” she said.

Keynan, a member of the PSC moved to defend the commission stating that the National Treasury was to blame for failure to pay electricity bills since there was no cash.

Wundanyi MP Opiyo Wandayi also faulted the PSC for leaving the lawmakers in the dark from Friday last week until Monday as a result of the accumulated debt.

Kenya Power (KP) disconnected electricity at Parliament Buildings but later reconnected, reportedly after the intervention of the Head of the Civil Service Joseph Kinyua.
