My Friends Advised Me to Reject EACC Job - Wabukala Says

Retired Archbishop Eliud Wabukala has revealed that he had been advised to reject the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) job by close friends.

While appearing for vetting in Parliament, Wabukala disclosed that his colleagues had warned him of how his good reputation would be ruined due to the nature of politics surrounding the EACC boss position.

“My friends have told me that if I take this job nitapakwa matope but I told them that Mungu alipakwa matope,” Wabukala said.

The Archbishop, however, maintained that he was ready for the responsibilities that awaited him, adding that he believes God will help him in his role.

“You can't fight corruption alone as a chair but I'll be seeking partnership from all departments, Parliament, media & Judiciary,” Wabukala stated.

The former Anglican church leader divulged that politics and tribalism were the major challenges in the fight against graft but maintained he would tackle them once he assumes office.

Wabukala's appointment was met with mixed reactions, with a section of the public expressing doubt on his ability to deal with graft culprits, most of whom are powerful and well-connected individuals.

The position of EACC chairman fell vacant following the resignation of former anti-corruption boss Philip Kinisu on August 31.

Kinisu left office amid pressure after a company linked to him was mentioned to have received Sh35 Million in the infamous NYS scandal.
