Nairobi Askaris Jailed Over Hawkers' Deaths

A Nairobi court has ordered two Nairobi County Askaris be locked up pending police investigations into claims that the officers are culpable of killing hawkers in the City.

The two – Alfred Ogesi alias Brown and Julius Ochieng – were Monday arraigned in court but did not take plea following a request by the prosecution for more time to complete investigations.

According to prosecution lawyer Duncan Ondimu, the two, remanded at Kamukunji police station, are likely to be charged with murder.

Also accused of brutally attacking traders is one Protus Sakala who appeared in court last Friday and will face charges alongside the two.

Resident Magistrate Joyce Gandanyi set the case for hearing on January 13.

The arrest of the suspects came after Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko lamented on Facebook of the brutal assault traders in the Central Business District were being subjected to.

Sonko even threatened to resign if no action was taken against the officers.
