Nairobi Businessman Digs Out Coffins, Skeletons at Lang'ata Cemetery

Residents of Lang'ata were on Thursday morning furious after a businessman dug trenches at the area cemetery exposing coffins and skeletons.

The trenches were meant to discharge raw sewage after the businessman bought a parcel of land adjacent to the graveyard and built apartments.

Health officials from Nairobi County accompanied by area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Alex Otieno, visited the cemetery and gave the private developer 24 hours to refill the channels.

“How can a private developer purchase land and build houses where souls are resting. This is against our culture and we will not allow it,” Otieno stated.

The legislator claimed that the ditches were hazardous adding that "it was disrespecting the resting souls".

Officials from the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) divulged that the trenches were illegal since the businessman had not sought permission from Government.

"What he is doing is illegal. We will make sure the trenches are refilled within 24 hours,'' the official stated.

Angry residents gathered in the morning to address the issue in Lang'ata and warned the government that they would take action if the businessman was not held accountable.
