Nairobi Hospital Doctors Down Their Tools for 2 Days

The Nairobi Hospital on Wednesday announced that its medical practitioners had downed their tools following instructions issued by the Kenya Medical Association.

In a press statement, the hospital stated that medical officers, senior registrars and junior consultants would not be available starting today at 9.00am.

"We as the Nairobi Hospital Medical officers, Senior Registrars and Junior Consultants at the Main Hospital Warwicks and Galleria Clinics FULLY SUPPORT the statement by the Kenya Medical Association," the statement read in part.

The Nairobi Hospital medical practitioners highlighted that they were standing in solidarity with the jailed doctors' union officials.

"In solidarity with our incarcerated union leaders, in collaboration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union and various professional societies, we will not be available at our various stations for duty for 48 hours starting from 9.00am 15th February 2017," Nairobi Hospital added.

A source at Nairobi Hospital divulged to Kenyans.co.ke that the nurses were still at their workstation and emergency cases were still being handled.

Mater Hospital, AAR, among other hospitals across the country also issued a similar notice stating that their doctors would not be at the facilities.

The move comes hours after KMA ordered its members in private hospitals and universities to strike for 48 hours if the arrested colleagues are not released.

"We announce that all members in Health Facilities and institutions shall not be offering any services for 48hours effective midnight today, and further instructions shall be issued should the doctors still be in jail at the expiry of this period," KMA said.
