Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko Registers Sonko Rescue Team as Non Governmental Organization (NGO)

Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Mike Sonko has registered his Sonko Rescue Team as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) after criticism that it was a public relations stunt.

In a move seen as a direct response to critics, the rescue team is now certified by the NGO Coordination Board as a non-profit organization.

Sonko, who won the Jubilee ticket for Nairobi’s governorship race, has been at loggerheads with the county government led by Dr Evans Kidero who had accused him of using the rescue team as a gimmick to attract attention.

Senator Sonko on Labour Day paraded the rescue team’s high-end fleet including Land Cruiser, Limousine, Mercedes-Benz and a Hummer in front of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

In 2015, the flamboyant Senator announced that he had disbanded the team and donated the ambulances to the county government.

He had declared that the services offered free of charge would instead be under the stewardship of Governor Kidero to ensure quality service delivery for the people of Nairobi.

Kidero, however, opposed the Senator's stand stating that Sonko Rescue team had not been licensed to offer specialised services and should be grounded immediately.

The Sonko Rescue Team was started by the senator in 2015.
