ODM Billboard Destroyed Over Uhuru Visit

An Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) billboard in Malindi town, Kilifi County, was brought down prior to President Uhuru Kenyatta's visit in the area, amid claims that the Jubillee coalition is trying to woo electorate in the Coastal region.

The billboard bearing images of Opposition leader Raila Odinga and Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, was allegedly destroyed by a group of youth under the supervision of security officers in the area.

The hoarding meant to indicate that the area was an Opposition stronghold with the writings:  "Welcome to Malindi, Home to ODM" inscribed on it.

Earlier on President Kenyatta denied claims that his long stay in Mombasa was a bid to win voters support in the region, in preparation for the 2017 general election, saying he was still in Kenya therefore should not be questioned on his itenerary.

“Many are asking why I have overstayed at the Coast but isn't Coast part of Kenya, what is the problem?” he said at a previous meeting.

In his Kilifi visit, the President was warmly welcomed by the locals including the Governor, who said he would only welcome Mr Kenyatta if he was coming to Kilifi as the Head of State and not as the head of Jubilee.

Governor Kingi further questioned the President on how the County would foot electricity bills of the street lighting projects, as he had not been informed of such plans since the beginning of the project.

“The same way people in Malindi, and Watamu want lights on their streets, is the same way other Kenyans in other counties want their streets lit. So you can't expect me to pay your bills...you now have to organise yourselves,” said President Kenyatta in response.
