ODM Dispute Tribunal Orders Fresh Gubernatorial Nominations in Five Taita Taveta Wards

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) disputes tribunal on Sunday ordered the party to conduct fresh nominations in Taita Taveta for the Gubernatorial seat in four wards.

The tribunal ruled that the electoral process in Taita Taveta could not be termed as conclusive minus the results of the four polling stations and ordered that the provisional certificate issued in the nominations be withdrawn until after a repeat exercise is conducted.

The disputes organ explained that the five polling stations had an accumulated number of approximately 7,000 votes yet the difference between incumbent Governor John Mruttu and Wundanyi Member of Parliament Thomas Mwadeghu was over 3,000votes.

In light of the revelation, the tribunal felt that the 7,000 votes could change the outcome and ordered for a repeat exercise in the areas.

Earlier on, the ODM National elections board had upheld Mwadeghu's win and declined Mruttu's appeal for a repeat in the five polling stations.

The order puts ODM at a tight spot after the tribunal stated that the repeat should be done in accordance with nomination rules yet the deadline for party nomination lapses tonight, Sunday.

ODM is concluding its nomination today, Sunday, and it is not clear how they will conduct the repeat exercise considering that there are strict nomination timelines set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The repeat offers Mruttu the chance to defend his seat after he had been defeated earlier by Mwadeghu.
