Officer Recruiting Fake IDPs Exposed

An officer said to be the Chairman of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nakuru County is on the spot after it emerged that he was recruiting fake IDPs in a bid to extort money from the government.

Mr Sam Chege, who heads an IDP camp at Mumoi area, has reportedly been gathering people from neighbouring villages to disguise themselves as IDPs.

Some of the post-election victims at the Mumoi camp are said to have already been compensated but are yet to leave the camp.

Mr Chege is accused of receiving bribes to include dishonest people in a list of 121 IDPs to be compensated while also omitting some genuine IDPs.

The chairman of the National Consultative Coordination Committee on Internally Displaced Persons, Sheikh Adan Wachu, on Friday visited the camp where he held a meeting with the residents.

He announced that anyone found pretending to be an IDP would face a 10-year jail term, a Sh5 million fine or both, according to the Constitution.

Over the weekend, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto promised to compensate IDPs who were yet to be resettled.

President Kenyatta stated that there were no displaced persons in the camps and that integrated IDPs were the only ones yet to be compensated.
