Paul Kobia Arrested For Assaulting Congolese Businessman Over Gold Deal

Controversial businessman Paul Kobia was on Wednesday night arrested at Riverside area in Nairobi.

Mr Kobia, who was previously linked to the death of Opposition leader Raila Odinga's son – Fidel Odinga – was apprehended on allegations that he abducted and assaulted a Congolese investor identified as Blanchard Condole.

According to reports, Kobia stormed Super Lodge along Kindaruma Road in Kilimani area accompanied by his four accomplices and threatened the Congolese with a gun over a Sh40 Million debt.

Witnesses revealed that they then forced Condole into a car as they roughed him up.

While driving off, Kobia is said to have fired in the air twice when the security guards tried to block him.

It was then that police were alerted and chased them up to Riverside area where they were apprehended.

Mr Kobia was locked up at Kilimani Police Station and his firearm confiscated.

The Congolese businessman sustained head injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Nairobi Womens Hospital.

In 2015 after the death of Fidel, Kobia was rushed to hospital by his family and the police after he allegedly became hysterical shouting that he had killed the former Prime Minister's son.

However, he later denied the claims stating: "There are claims out there that I confessed to having killed Fidel Odinga; that is false and malicious".

"There were also reports that I was arrested outside Village Market after allegedly causing a stir and shouting what officials termed as 'crazy and wild' things. The truth is that police never arrested me but my family brought me to hospital," Kobia said.

The wealthy businessman has been involved in dubious dealings including a case in November 2010 where he was arrested and charged with pretending to sell 825kg of gold and obtaining Sh17.4 million from a South African national, Dennis Ray Schmelzenbac.

He was later cleared of the charges.
