PHOTOS: CORD Teargassed At IEBC Offices

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) supporters were on Monday afternoon teargassed a few minutes after Opposition leaders had made their speeches.

The protestors got into trouble with the anti-riot officers after they reportedly started hurling stones at security officers who had been deployed in large numbers to guard Anniversary Towers which houses the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices.

During the demonstration, part of University Way was closed as leaders addressed their supporters vowing to continue pushing for removal of the IEBC Commissioners by staging similar protests every Monday.

CORD leader Raila Odinga maintained that he would not participate in the 2017 elections if the current Electoral body will not be reconstituted.

Earlier on, traders at the Central Business District reportedly suffered losses after they closed shops following fears of looting by CORD supporters, protesting against IEBC.

As the demonstrators marched along Nairobi's Moi Avenue, some of them allegedly snatched mobile phones and other valuables from members of the public.

The supporters moved around the CBD spreading their call to have the poll body disbanded or its Commissioners quit office. Shops were breifly closed along Haile Sellasie, Moi Avenue and University Way where the CORD brigade had camped.

On Monday morning, County Police Commander Japheth Koome had indicated that some of the protestors were armed and intended to take advantage of the situation to plan criminal activities.

Koome went ahead and assured that officers were ready to deal with any case of violence and would not allow anybody to disrupt peace within the City.

There was heavy presence of police guarding the offices with Dog Unit officers and water cannons deployed to avert any chaos.

The Coalition urged its supporters countrywide to rally in large numbers and protest against IEBC, citing unfairness within the body while dispensing its duties.
