PHOTOS: Jubilee MP Arrested Over Voter Bribery in Malindi

A Jubilee Member of Parliament (MP) has been arrested in Malindi Constituency for allegedly propagating election malpractices in the ongoing by-election.

Mwea MP Peter Gitau was nabbed on Monday morning reportedly dishing out money to voters at one of the polling stations in the area.

The legislator is said to have been carrying Sh32,000 in denominations of one-thousand shilling notes, raising suspicion from Kilifi Women Representative Aisha Jumwa who informed the police.

According to Jumwa, Gitau was giving Sh1,000 to female voters including some who were not even registered when she confronted him assisted by irate youths.

Jumwa further added that the legislator had close to Sh200,000 much of which was scooped by the youths as she retained the rest as evidence.

While at Malindi Police Station, Mr Gitau refuted the claims saying that he was rightfully at the polling station as a party agent.

IEBC Commissioner official Yusuf Nzibo, confirmed to have received the allegations, saying that it would be difficult to charge the MP with any offence given that there was no evidence of him being caught in the act.

Earlier on, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Communications Director Philip Etale was arrested at his hotel room hours before the Malindi mini poll kicked off.
