PNU Requests Norway to Protect it from Jubilee

The Party of National Unity (PNU) has made a surprising request asking a foreign government to protect it from harassment by Jubilee.

The party, which is associated with former President Mwai Kibaki, made the request through one of its trustees Yuda M’Imunya.

In a message addressed to Norway deputy ambassador to Kenya, the party official complained that the Jubilee team was working to forcefully fold PNU – a move he claimed would undermine democracy in Kenya.

“We believe that Norway can extend help to besieged small parties without interfering in the internal affairs of Kenya,” I’Imunya stated during the meeting that was held in Meru.

He added that Norway had a history of supporting human rights and democracy in Kenya.

The ambassador did not respond to the requests which have come at a time that President Uhuru Kenyatta has warned foreign governments against interfering in Kenya's internal affairs.

I’Imunya was speaking in reference to a court battle pitting the current members against a break-up faction that has been claiming that the former President's party had disbanded to join PNU.

The current team, led by Meru Governor Peter Munya, won the first round of the battle that was followed by the replacement of Kibaki as party leader.

Kibaki has maintained silence on whether he had resigned from the party that won him his second term in office.
