Police Confusion in Tragic Strathmore University Drill

The tragic security drill at Strathmore University on Monday, which left one person dead and over 20 others injured has aroused questions on whether the administration had been authorized to carry out the drill.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet on Tuesday, said that the police were not informed on the security drill at the campus which triggered a terror scare even in the neighbourhood.

In his statement, Boinnet ordered for investigations to be undertaken stating that though drills were essential for any institution, high protocol authorization must be sought before being carried out.

“Security drill on preparedness is a very highly professional activity and must follow protocol on modalities of authorization,” Boinnet's statement read in part.

Strathmore University had earlier stated that they had involved the Lang'ata area OCPD and his team in the exercise that went wrong.

However, Police Spokesperson Charles Owino said that the OCPD was not the right authority for a matter of such magnitude.

At the same time, Nairobi Police Chief Japheth Koome, asserted that all protocols were followed in the security drill, adding that it was meant to gauge preparedness in case of a terror attack.

The University Vice Chancellor, John Odhiambo, acknowledged that he was also not aware of the mock exercise.
