Police Explain Use of Live Bullets in CORD Protests

Kenya Police Spokesperson Charles Owino on Tuesday seemingly justified why the police used live bullets during Monday protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Mr Owino pointed out that officers were allowed to use excessive force including live bullets if their lives were endangered.

He stated on Tuesday that they had no apologies to those wounded during the demonstrations stating that: "those shot were assaulting officers”.

He went further to congratulate officers for the action they took mentioning that they did well in controlling the chaotic situation.

"I thank officers because we would have lost very many lives yesterday," Mr Owino said.

The Police Spokesperson noted that it was not a guarantee that police guns would always be loaded with rubber bullets during protests.

"50 of them (officers) may have rubber bullets but one or two will have live bullets," he emphatically stated.

Owino added that in some areas officers used all the rubber bullets they had to disperse the demonstrators and since the rowdy crowds kept surging towards them, the officers used what was in their hand.

He also insisted on the need for officers to protect the rifles they were carrying.

The fourth anti-IEBC protests which took place in many counties saw three people dead while several others suffered severe gunshot injuries.
