President Kenyatta Amuses Golfers at 49th Kenya Open Closing Ceremony

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday amused golfers and golf enthusiasts at the Muthaiga Golf Club after he insisted that Governor Evans Kidero speaks at a brief event marking the end of the 49th Kenya Open.

Kenyatta insisted that Kidero gives a few remarks lest the people of Mombasa fault him for not giving governors an opportunity to speak during events he officiates.

“I had to allow Kidero to speak because afterward, Mombasa people might say I do not allow governors to speak in this country,” the President jested.

The President’s comments sent the dignitaries, golfers and other golf enthusiasts roaring with laughter.

At the event, Uhuru advocated for the sport, which is mostly associated with wealthy and aged people, to be inclusive of young people especially those in secondary schools.

"It is a game that teaches discipline, honour and it is a game that we will like to see more and more of our youth participating in," said the President.

Other dignitaries present during the ocassion were former President Mwai Kibaki, Cabinet Secretaries Hassan Wario (Sports) and Najib Balala (Tourism) but none of them got the chance to speak.

The one-week Kenya Open tournament, which had begun on Monday, March 20, received a major boost of Sh1 Million sponsorship from MultiChoice Kenya.

This was meant to be channelled towards covering administrative costs of the event as the Group deepens its commitment to supporting sports in the country.
