President Uhuru Kenyatta to Chair Crisis Meeting After MPs Caused Drama at Parliament

Kenyans were on Tuesday surprised to see the chaotic scenes caused by their leaders at the National Assembly.

At one point, Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo, went on an angry tantrum, insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s personal character.

Apart from the shameful insults, the parliamentary sitting was characterised by physical violence with MPs engaging in fistfights while others allegedly used pepper sprays against their colleagues.

It has now emerged that President Kenyatta was following the chaos at Parliament and after the session ended, he is reported to have sent text messages to Jubilee legislators, summoning them for a crisis meeting at State House, Nairobi.

The meeting to be held on Wednesday will focus on establishing a new way of passing the controversial amendments to the Elections Act.

CORD MPs have vehemently opposed the amendments introduced through the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee.

The amendments allow the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to revert to manual identification of voters and manual transmission in instances where technology has failed.

Jubilee MPs have argued that 25 percent of the country lacks the requisite network coverage that would allow 100 percent technological use.

On the other hand, the opposition has insisted that the IEBC is well funded and should be in a position to ensure an election process that meets the requirements of the current law and regulations that were passed by the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
