President Uhuru Kenyatta Holds Press Briefing at State House Over Jubilee Nominations

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday held a press conference at State House regarding the cancellation of the Jubilee Party nominations.

First, Kenyatta apologised for the cancellation of the exercise blaming it on under-preparedness of his team.

Secondly, he explained that the party had been overwhelmed by the high turnout of its supporters that caused inadequacy of ballot papers in almost all the polling centres.

"Nobody expected the kind of turnout that we witnessed yesterday. We were hit with a shortage of voting materials. We have taken that into account to ensure every single registered voter will have an opportunity to participate in the rescheduled primaries," Uhuru stated.

Kenyatta announced that the party was remapping the entire process taking into account the massive turnout experienced yesterday.

He also divulged that a detailed and revised primaries timetable would be issued by the parties headquarters in accordance with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) timelines.

Accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto, the Head of State further defended the Jubilee officials maintaining that he had confidence in them and was proud to be the leader of the party.

"I have full confidence in the team standing behind me and their ability to deliver in these nominations. We want our results to reflect the true will of the people and that is why we cancelled the nominations," he assured.

On the issue of having some preferred candidates, Kenyatta affirmed that his administration would not side with any of the aspirants but would allow the will of the people to prevail.

He was responding to allegations by Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago that some officers in Ruto's office were influencing nomination affairs of the county.

The President emphasised that Jubilee was committed to free, fair, transparent and credible nominations.
