ODM leader Raila Odinga on Thursday honoured his deceased son Fidel Odinga by presiding over a major football match in his recognition
The match was played between Kenya’s biggest football club, Gor Mahia and Homa Bay Combined Stars.
The Fidel Odinga Cup is one of the activities that were carried out to mark the Luo Cultural Festival that climaxed on Thursday.
The football title is named after Raila’s first born son, Fidel who died on 4th January in 2015.
The 42-year-old businessman and ardent football fan passed on in his sleep at his Karen home in circumstances that remain unclear.
At the same time, Odinga urged the youth in Kenya to utilise their sporting talent, adding that pursuing such ambitions has economic and social benefits.
"As an ardent fan of football and sport in general, I urged our youth not to hesitate in pursuing sporting ambition. As time moves on, this is fast becoming a viable avenue to battling the poverty and idleness plaguing young people," the former Prime Minister stated on the matter.
