Raila Odinga's Spectre International Limited in Court Over Debt Claims

A contractor has moved to court to ensure that Spectre International Limited, a company owned by Opposition leader Raila Odinga, is forced to pay a debt owed to the contractor or face insolvency and liquidation of its assets.

The company is tied to Kisumu Molasses Company which is majority-owned by the Odinga family.

Subira Shipping Contractors, through their lawyers, filed the petition at the High Court last week indicating that the controversy-laden molasses company is once again headed for trouble.

Raila's company was first informed of the impending petition through an advertisement placed on local dailies after a court hearing held on March 23.

The molasses plant was previously owned by a Canadain company, Energem Resources, which declared bankruptcy in 2011.

Energem went down after one of its managers gambled away its fortunes on an ill-informed business venture.

Mr Odinga denied claims that his company was in debt after allegations were forged against him over some million shillings owed to Mumias Sugar Company last year.

" Mumias supplied molasses to my company on a bank guarantee of Sh2 million. Where is the Sh300 million debt coming from?" the opposition leader explained.

Spectre International Limited is different from Mr Odinga’s East African Spectre, a liquefied petroleum gas cylinder manufacturer based in Nairobi.
