Raila's Brother Oburu Odinga and Cousin Jakoyo Midiwo Kicked Out in ODM Nominations

The political tide seems to be blowing strongly against Opposition Chief Raila Odinga's family, as five Odingas, who had expressed interest in various political seats, might not be contesting in the August 8th elections after losing in nominations or pulling out of the race altogether.

Top on the list is Raila's elder brother Oburu Odinga who was contesting for the Bondo Parliamentary seat. The nominated MP suffered a painful loss after he was floored by his rival Gideon Ochanda who secured 28,446 votes against Oburu's 4,000 during the ODM nominations held on Tuesday.

Raila's Cousin Gem Member of Parliament (MP) Jakoyo Midiwo, who was looking to defend his post, lost in the ODM nominations after he was defeated by Elisha Odhiambo who garnered 10,590 votes against Midiwo's 8,950.

A cousin to the former Prime Minister, Carey Orege, who was interested in the Siaya County gubernatorial seat lost to incumbent Cornel Rasanga who clinched the ODM ticket with 143,446 votes.

Oburu, Midiwo and Orege, however, have a chance of getting back to the race as independent candidates.

The Opposition leader's sister, Kisumu Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga, who had earlier on expressed her bid to unseat incumbent Jack Ranguma in the August 8th elections kicked herself out of the contest before the nominations.

Ms Odinga surprised her supporters when she announced that she was no longer interested in the governor's race stating that she wanted to concentrate on campaigning for Raila. She, however, noted that she would work with the ODM candidate for the Kisumu Governor seat.

Lastly, Raila's daughter, Rosemary Odinga, has also pulled out of the 2017 race. On Monday, Rosemary sent out an emotional video online stating that she had dropped out of the race for the Kibra Parliamentary seat following advice from her doctor.

Rosemary is currently getting medical treatment in South Africa after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour in March.

All eyes are now left on Raila Odinga, who is seeking the presidential ticket to face President Uhuru Kenyatta for a second time, in what political pundits have billed as a do-or-die chance for the Odinga dynasty to ascend to power.
