Resilient Gikomba Traders Start Rebuilding From the Ashes

Sometimes, tragedies deal hard blows but life must go on- a fact that Gikomba traders seem to have embraced.

The traders who lost huge amounts of property and investment in the Tuesday morning fire have started rebuilding their stalls.

The fire burnt down an approximated 70 percent of Kenya's biggest market and the residential homes around.

Millions of shillings and what was for most traders the only source of income was reduced to ashes.

The fire is said to have started at around 2 am in the morning, making it impossible to salvage anything from the storage stalls as no one was at the market.

Deputy President William Ruto, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, Senator Mike Sonko and other leaders who visited the site promised that the government, through the National Youth Service (NYS) would help in rebuilding stalls at the market.

The traders however have vowed not to wait for the government, explaining that the longer they waited, the longer their lives stay on put.

They showed up at the area, armed with tools and started the building of stalls, eager to resume normal operations as soon as possible.
