Revealed:Nairobi Youth Spending Up to 8 Hours a Day on Terrorist Recruitment Sites

Young people in Nairobi are spending most of their days on the internet, seeking information on recruitment into groups associated with terrorism.

This is according to a report given by the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC).

An analysis of internet usage in the country showed that most of the students visiting these sites are university students, seeking recruitment into the groups.

Speaking to students at Strathmore University, NCTC Director Isaac Ochieng said that more than 20 youth, most of them from universities have already traveled to Syria and joined Islamic State (ISIS).

The alarming rate of radicalization among the youth, mostly aged between 20 and 25 has been blamed on the internet, peer pressure and religion.

Most of them are being duped into the dangerous commitment which is often painted as a fashionable or brave venture.

As a good number comes to find out, the rosy picture is far from the truth -if not the exact opposite- and they own up to the authorities.

So far, 100 youth who had crossed over to Somalia to join the terrorist group Al Shabaab have come back to Kenya and surrendered.

NCTC is currently working on de-radicalizing the youngsters.

Ochieng appealed to parents to monitor their children and report suspicious behavior as this will save them from joining terror groups under misguided notions.
