Rot in Healthcare Sector Unveiled as 10 Medical Fraudsters are Arrested in Crackdown

10 illegally practising medics from sections of Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia Counties have been arrested in a crackdown by the Kenya Medical Laboratories and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).

Officials from the body raided hospitals in the region, seeking to ascertain whether the lab technicians and technologists were certified and licensed.

Seven of the medical lab technicians were arrested in Kitale, while the other three were arrested in Eldoret.

Surprisingly, two of the suspects arrested are from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).

Other unlicensed practitioners are said to have fled the hospital when they got wind of the raid.

The hospital is the second largest in the country and as such, has a very high number of patients every day.

Speaking to journalists, KMLTTB Executive Officer Patrick Kisabei expressed surprise that the facility which is trusted by so many Kenyans, was found to have unlicensed technicians.

He said that patients under the care of any unlicensed medical practitioner face the risk of being misdiagnosed or contracting a new infection altogether.

The incident comes barely a fortnight after children from Busia County suffered paralysis, which was traced to an injection given at a local dispensary.
