Deputy President William Ruto has alleged that the CORD coalition is planning to delay the 2017 General Election set for August 8.
Addressing leaders from Trans Nzoia County at his Sugoi home in Uasin Gishu, Ruto accused the Opposition of creating several excuses with an intention of impeding preparations for the election.
The Deputy President highlighted what he termed as roadblocks and delay tactics introduced by CORD in order to delay the upcoming polls.
“They complained about the IEBC which has since been disbanded and now they are complaining about the manual backup system. These are just excuses to delay the elections,” he said.
He questioned why the Opposition was opposed to the manual backup system yet most election processes are usually done manually.
According to the DP, those criticising the proposed election laws, which allow the electoral body to have a manual voter identification system, were not prepared for the polls hence had shifted to employing delay tactics.
“The opposition knows well they cannot compete with Jubilee that’s why they are looking for excuses but we want to tell them they should be ready for elections in August,” he added.
The same had been inferred by President Uhuru Kenyatta who in his New Year's message, assured that the election would indeed be conducted in 2017.
