Kenyans on social media were on Thursday engaged in various debates originating from happenings within and outside the country. Here are some of the hot topics.

1. Raila in Nyamira

CORD leader Raila Odinga made it to the top trends on Thursday afternoon following his campaign in Nyamira County where he was encouraging the electorate to register as voters.

In his tour, Mr Odinga boldly stated: "I will prove to Jubilee that I have the tyranny of numbers after this voter registration exercise."

2. Kalonzo Musyoka

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Thursday trended on twitter after he revealed that his ID number had been used to register a woman from Gatundu North, Kiambu County.

Mr Musyoka, who had stopped at a registration centre in Wajir decided to verify his details and was shocked to find out that someone else had registered using his ID number.

3. UhuruTenaMuranga

UhuruTenaMuranga featured on the top trends as President Uhuru Kenyatta was expected to visit Murang'a County to encourage locals to turn out in large numbers and register as voters

His tour in the county was scheduled to start at Blue Post and then head to Jogoo Kimakia, Gatunyu, Gatanga Junction, Gacharage, Kangari, Kigumo, Kirere, Muthithi, Kaharati, Maragua and Muranga towns, Kahuhia, Kangema and Kiria-ini.

4. Nick Salat

KANU Secretary-General Nick Salat became the subject of online debate since his party was holding a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting where disciplinary action against him was set to be determined.

Salat got into troubled waters following remarks he made on Wednesday last week indicating that KANU had joined the National Super Alliance (NASA).

The KANU Secretary General made the utterances during NASA's meeting at the Bomas of Kenya where Opposition leaders came together in a bid to dethrone the Jubilee administration.

After his remarks, KANU leaders rubbished his claims stating that they were personal and should not be associated with the Party.

5. Drought KE

The ongoing drought situation ravaging parts of the country trended on social media after Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett held a press conference to address the food crisis.

Speaking to journalists, Mr Bett reassured Kenyans that the Government was on top of the matter, with 21 million bags of maize available to feed the country for until June.

He further pointed out that in case the drought situation persisted, Kenya would have to import maize.

However, Kenyans on Twitter posted pictures of the dire situations in various parts of the country.

6. Gambia

Kenyans were concerned over the recent turmoil in Gambia after the incumbent President, Yahya Jammeh, refused to leave the office for the newly-elected leader - Adama Barrow.

Mr Jammeh, who was supposed to be out of office on Wednesday, has rejected the December 1, 2016, election results and on Tuesday he declared a state of emergency in the small nation.

The president-elect's inauguration ceremony was set for Thursday but the incumbent is not willing to vacate.

The Western African bloc troops have given Jammeh a midnight deadline to either step-down or force would be used against him.

Colonel Seydou Maiga Moro with the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) said “All the troops are already on site. If no solution has been reached by midnight, we will take action."
