Trending Topics in Kenya on February 18, 2017

Kenyans on social media took to Twitter to discuss some of the topics that hit headlines on Saturday.

Kiambu

The topic was among the top trends majorly due to a report that a former wealthy politician's son had been killed by a mob after he was caught stealing a television set and a pair of shoes.

According to the story carried on a local tabloid, the son of the former Kiambu mayor was accosted by angry residents on the rooftop of his neighbour's house with the stolen property.

On being questioned about the goods, he was unable to respond prompting the irate crowd to descend on him and beat him to death.

Turkana

Turkana county was trending for the better part of the morning following a Friday evening incident in which shots were fired during a meeting led by CORD leader Raila Odinga.

About 15 bandits are said to have stormed the forum held in Turkana East, pelted stones at the dais and later fired shots disrupting the rally.

The incident was highly condemned with netizens warning that it could lead to unnecessary tension in the run-up General Election.

Marigat

The trend was fueled by the unfortunate killing of a Member of County of Assembly and an aspiring MP who were shot dead in the area on Saturday morning.

Two gangsters armed with an AK47 rifle and a machete stormed a nightclub where the deceased were enjoying their time and killed them before disappearing.

Francis Wangusi

The Director General of Communications Authority on Friday refuted reports that the body had written to mobile telephone companies requesting to be allowed to tap into the phone calls, messages, and mobile money transactions of their users.

Wangusi denied the claims of spying and explained that the "black-box" they want installed will allow them to hack and block SIM of users who fail to register in accordance with the law.
