Ugali Eating in Kibera Among Top 6 Vacation Ideas in Africa

An article by the New York Times revealed that eating Ugali in Nairobi's Kibera slum is one of the top 6 vacation ideas when visiting Africa.

The former Nairobi Bureau Chief for the media house, Marc Lacey, narrated how much he enjoyed the delicacy despite the glares from locals.

“I have eaten it (ugali) in Kibera, Nairobi’s sprawling slum, and noticed local residents’ distrust of me slowly shrink as my healthy serving did the same,” read the article in part.

The writer described how wholesome the cornmeal was and went into details of how he was taught to eat the sumptous meal alongside nyama choma and sukuma wiki.

"First, pick it up with the right hand. Doing otherwise is like screaming aloud, “I am a mzungu,” or foreigner, in Swahili. Roll it up into a ball as you might a wad of silly putty and stick your thumb into the center to create a deep gully. Then, and here’s the best part, use this mass of maize as a mini-shovel to scoop up the other food you have around. That might include nyama choma, which is grilled meat, and sukuma wiki, which is the Kenyan version of greens."

Mr Lacey termed ugali-eating as a necessary venture one must engage in when visiting Kenya.

The report which compiled ideas from current and former New York Times international news correspondents, gave a detailed insight into five other regions in Africa that are ultimate destinations.

Among them was Kenya's Masai Mara Game Reserve, Victoria Falls in Zambia, Monrovia in Liberia, Tunisia's Carthage Ruins and the waters of Guinea-Bissau.
