VIDEO: CORD Protests Begin Early

Protests by the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) calling for the removal of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) began early Monday morning.

Key roads such as the Museum Hill underpass in Nairobi were blocked by protestors who set tyres ablaze.

In Kibera, business premises and schools remained closed as residents feared being caught up in the mayhem after a warning by the police that the demonstrations were outlawed.

A contingent of anti-riot police officers was deployed along major roads in Nairobi ready to handle protesters defying the police directive.

In Kisumu, the same script was duplicated as schools and businesses were closed.

In Migori, the demonstrations kicked off earlier than usual, with the Opposition supporters blocking part the Migori-Sirare highway by setting hills of tyres on fire.

On Friday, the police rejected CORD's  request to proceed with the demonstrations on grounds that the protests had been outlawed by the court.

However, CORD's lead counsel Senator James Orengo, on Sunday argued that the court order only barred members of the Opposition and their supporters from storming the IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers.
