VIDEO: County Gov't Defends Purchase of Wheelbarrows Worth Sh109,000 Each

The Bungoma County Government has set stage for fresh controversy, following the purchase of 10 wheelbarrows at a sum amount of Sh1.09 Million.

The move has sparked contention with residents and human activists coming out to condemn the move.

Bungoma County Governor Ken Lusaka, however, defended the acquisition noting that the wheelbarrows were unique and long-lasting, since they are made of aluminium.

“The preliminary report indicates that the Ministry of Agriculture made a requisition and the committee recommended that the wheelbarrows be purchased at a cost of Sh109,000 but the market price ranges between Ksh 78,000 to Ksh 112,320 while hooks cost Ksh 32,550,” said Lusaka.

Human rights activist Lumumba Wekesa questioned how a wheelbarrow could cost that much, pointing out that it could be one of the many corruption dealings in the county.

Women activist Kellan Wavomba weighed in on the matter, urging the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to step in and probe alleged graft that has marred the county's executive.

The wheelbarrows will be used in the slaughter house situated in Chwele, Bungoma County.
