VIDEO: MCAs Fight After Speaker's Portrait is Broken

Members of the Mombasa County Assembly on Tuesday got into a physical fight after reportedly disagreeing on a motion proposing the impeachment of the House Speaker, Thadius Rajwayi.

Reports indicate that the conflict started last week when Mohamed Hatimy, a nominated MCA and Tononoka representative Saad Faraj pulled down the Speaker's portrait vowing to remove Mr Rajwayi from office once the house resumed.

At one time Faraj even tried to replace the Speaker's portrait with that of former Mayor Ahmed Mohdhar.

The members attempted to table the motion before the house but conflict erupted as a camp led by Kongowea MCA Jabez Oduor - which supports the speaker- shot it down.

Mr Odour stated that the MCAs learnt that the Speaker was about to expel them after they had broken his portrait and closed the offices of Majority and Minority leader.

During the session, Oduor and Hatimy who were sitted next to each other started exchanging blows after the Speaker had finished reading his speech to officially open the assembly that had been on recess.

Mr Oduor indicated that Hatimy provoked him forcing him to hit back.

The misconduct prompted the Speaker to send the two out of the house, a move that did not augur well with Mr Faraj who firmly stated that no one would leave the house.

“Hakuna mtu atatoka, leo lazima tupigane (No one will leave the chambers. We must fight today)” Faraj was quoted by the Star.

Faraj then moved  to the front of the chambers in an attempt to snatch the mace but was knocked down by MCAs supporting the Speaker.

In a video posted online, the ward representatives are seen vigorously engaging one another in kicks and blows while hurling abuses.
