VIDEO: Drama as Nyeri MCAs Fight

Members of Nyeri County Assembly engaged in verbal and physical fights after they failed to come to an agreement regarding the fate of the incumbent Majority Leader Jesse Kamuri.

The dramatic incident witnessed on Tuesady, was sparked by Naro Moru MCA, Rinyiru Marete, who angrily hurled a bottle of water across the room to hit Mr Kamuri after he allegedly called a section of the MCAs “corrupt”.

The MCAs allied to The National Alliance were divided in support of Mr Kamuri and Duncan Gituanja who had supposedly been groomed to take over the Leader of Majority seat, after Mr Kamuri was accused of gross misconduct.

The group in support of Mr Gituanja wanted a vote by acclamation, while those supporting Mr Kamuri wanted a secret ballot that would be conducted in the presence of the media.

“This is a battle between the corrupt and the transparent we are going to fight this battle to the end,” said one of the MCAs.

Mr Kamuri highlighted that elections across the world were covered by the Members of the Press to ensure accountability, therefore theirs was not an exception. He further accused the County Governor Nderitu Gachagua of having a hand in his ousting.

“I have led the war against corruption that has seen me fighting many battles and it is therefore obvious where all these attacks are originating from,” said Mr Kamuri.

Opponents of Mr Kamuri accused him of being proud and in contention with the Governor, noting that it was necessary to replace him with a leader who was in good terms with Governor Gachagua.

The meeting was adjourned at the height of the confrontation, which prompted the police to step in, but was later reconvened with only 21 MCAs out of 36 present.

Mr Gituanja was finally elected as the Leader of Majority in the Assembly putting a calm to the storm.
