Why MCAs Could Collapse Devolution

Chairman of the Council of Governors, Peter Munya together with Nairobi Governor, Evans Kidero, have accused Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) of pursuing personal vendetta against the County Chiefs.

Speaking at Methodist Church in Ruaraka, Nairobi, the two warned that the trend being taken by MCAs would in the long run affect the performance of Governors and jeopardize Devolution.

“The impeachments that have taken place have not been done because there's mismanagement or because Governors are guilty, but because somebody somewhere is trying to arm-twist the arms of Governors,” said Munya.

On his part, Kidero urged MCAs to handle corruption allegations in the counties with the seriousness they deserved, without using it as a decoy to impeach Governors for personal reasons.

“Corrupt people need to be taken as murderers of our future and specific actions need to be taken...at the same time it cannot be used as a vendetta against people who are not liked for one reason or another,” he said.

MCAs have in the past been blamed for waging wars against Governors who refused to heed to their personal demands. Governors from Busia, Kiambu, Machakos, Kwale among other counties are now unsure of their fate as MCAs have either threatened or already filed impeachment motions against them.

Murang'a Governor, Mwangi wa Iria is the latest victim after he was impeached by the county's MCAs and now his fate lies with the Senate.
