Why Schools Could be Forced to Keep Playgrounds Open Over the Holidays

Schools within Nairobi County may be forced to keep their play grounds open for the students over the holiday.

This is after the Nairobi City County Assembly adopted a motion to the effect.

Laini Saba Ward Representative David Kitavi, while tabling the motion pointed out that increasing number of constructions in Nairobi have left little or no ground at all for children to play.

He further explained that forcing children to stay indoors all day with the television and play station affects their social skills, by turning them into introverts.

Kitavi further blamed the lack of space for children's recreational activities on land grabbing and headteachers hiring out the space for functions.

An implementation committee is set to meet later this week to discuss the details of how the motion will be implemented.

Various researches have pointed out that recreational activities are imperative for emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development of children.
