Why Striking Teachers Could be Arrested

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has declared schools and other learning institutions out of bound to protests and demonstrations by teachers.

CS Nkaissery maintained that the government had a mandate to ensure the safety of children and teachers who are going on with learning despite the ongoing teachers strike.

"This has to be done within the confines of the law and any action which poses a threat to public security will be promptly countered by the government because it has a responsibility to ensure law and order is maintained at all times."

The CS said he had instructed the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett, County Commissioners and all law enforcement agencies across the country to ensure that the instructions are adhered to.

Nkaissery's word of caution comes even as the teachers strike gets into its third week.

Teachers continue to hold on their hard-line stance that they will only resume duty after their legally awarded pay rise is awarded.

The government on the other hand remains adamant that teachers have to go back to work as an amicable solution on how to handle the pay demand is sought.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has since weighed in on the pay battle, noting that teachers' had a legitimate case in asking for a pay rise, but the demand was unsustainable.
