Teachers Now Threaten to Sue TSC

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Post-Primary Education Teachers Union (KUPPET) have threatened to sue the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), over unpaid September salaries.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court had ordered TSC to pay teachers their September salaries after it suspended the five-week industrial action.

According to the unions, their members had not received their dues even after they complied with the court's ruling to return to work.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion said that the union had last week written to TSC urging them to follow the court's directives to pay their members, but the commission did not heed to their plea.

KUPPET indicated that it planned to sue TSC if the salaries were not paid by the end of Monday, October 12.

However, TSC pointed out that some teachers had not gone back to work despite the court's ruling and directive issued by their unions.

The court through Judge Nelson Abuodha, had warned TSC against victimizing the teachers.

TSC released a payroll that indicated only 42,973 teachers would receive their September pay leaving out 245,000 others. The paid teachers included Principals, their Deputies and Heads of Departments who were in schools despite the nationwide industrial action.
