7 University Students Arrested in Arson Attempt

Seven students of Laikipia University in Nyahururu were arrested on Sunday after they allegedly tried to set the institution's library ablaze.

The students found at the nick of time by night guards managed to set fire to a section of the library after a succesful referendum that would see the students' constitution changed.

According to Vice Chancellor Francis Lelo, a jerry can full of petrol was recovered as they took to custody the suspected arsonists.

"We suspect that the students wanted to torch the library because the referendum question to change the constitution sailed through. The guards noticed that a section of the library was on fire and bumped on the students in action at the scene," he said.

One of the culprits was arrested after he had posted some messages on his facebook account in regard to the incident.
The students were taken to the Nyahururu Police Station and would be arraigned in court to face arson charges.

This comes days after Maseno University students were accused of burning down their adminstration block destroying crucial information.

Witnesses linked the fire to discontent over issues surrounding student union elections which were set for October 16.
