Nigerian Student Lands Kenyan Police Officer in Trouble

An Administration Police (AP) officer is set to be arraigned in court on Tuesday after being arrested for extorting money from a foreign student.

Constable Peter Mburu attached to Security of Government Buildings department, was apprehended after he was identified by a Nigerian student who claimed to have given the officer Sh50,000 for fear of being arrested.

The student at the United States International University (USIU) alleged that Constable Mburu met him in Kasarani estate and for no apparent reason ordered him to pay the money, failure to which he would plant bhang on him and plan for his deportation.

According to the student identified as Abdul Rasheed, the officer together with a colleague approached him with orders prompting him to surrender the money to avoid falling victim of the threats.

Nairobi County Police Commander Japheth Koome said that Mburu was identified on Sunday morning after the student alerted police officers.

Upon further investigations, detectives unearthed that the suspect was an uniformed officer, with Koome assuring that he was assisting in tracing his accomplice after which he would be taken to court.

In the last few months, several police officers have been arrested in connection to crime. Last month, four officers attached to government officials' security details were nabbed with ivory.
