ICC Let Uhuru Go Because of Mercy - Raila Says

CORD leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday argued that President Uhuru Kenyatta should have been convicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity in the 2007-08 post-election violence.

Speaking during the Wiper National Governing Council (NGC) meeting at the Kasarani Gymnasium, Odinga stated that anyone accused of murder should not be allowed to run for any seat in Kenya.

“He was accused of weighty charges. He was allowed to vie for President in 2013. Although he was charged with serious crimes against humanity, he was allowed to come home because of mercy.

“In Kenya, a person accused of murder cannot run for MP, but ICC forgave him. There is no withdrawal from the ICC," Raila stated.

The former Prime Minister also claimed that Kenyatta had sensed defeat and that's why he (Uhuru) alleged that foreign countries were trying to influence the upcoming General Election.

Speaking during the 53rd Jamhuri Day Celebrations, the Head of State stated: ''There is already money coming into Kenya from abroad in the guise of supporting good governance or civic education. However, its true intention is to influence our electoral choices".

He added that Kenya would reconsider its membership at ICC arguing that the Hague-based court was impartial.

ICC dropped charges against Kenyatta on December 5, 2014, citing lack of enough evidence to convict him.

Meanwhile, the Wiper Party endorsed Kalonzo Musyoka as its presidential candidate and he will battle it out with Odinga and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula for the CORD ticket.

Kalonzo urged Odinga and Wetangula to give him a chance claiming that he was the best-placed candidate to dethrone Kenyatta in the 2017 Elections.
