Details on Standard Gauge Railway Operations from Nairobi to Mombasa

The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which will be officially launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta next week on Wednesday, will be ferrying 1200 passengers per trip.

Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina highlighted that only one train would operate between Mombasa and Nairobi from May 31.

Mr Maina also noted that the train would operate one daily return trip between Mombasa and Nairobi. He, however, added that the frequency may be reviewed depending on passenger demand.

Before December, travellers will only have the choice of economy or first class, however, there are plans to start the business class in December.

The SGR trains will be taking five hours to cover the distance between Nairobi and Mombasa.

There will be seven stopovers on the routes namely Mariakani, Voi, Mtito Andei, Kibwezi, Emali, Miaseni and Athi River.

KR also noted that cargo train services will take off in January next year.

“For freight, we plan to introduce the train services in January next year since we are still doing trial operations,” Mr Maina conveyed.
