Former PS Thuita Mwangi Quits Laikipia Governorship Race

More independent candidates have responded to the call by Jubilee Party leadership to drop their bids and support its candidates.

In the latest incident, former Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary (PS) Thuita Mwangi has quit the race for Laikipia County governorship.

Mwangi who contested for the Jubilee ticket in the nominations and lost to Joshua Irungu had obtained clearance from the IEBC to contest as an independent candidate.

The Laikipia County Deputy Returning Officer, George Odhiambo confirmed his withdrawal from the race.

“Last week we cleared three candidates to contest the gubernatorial race. But one of them, Mr Thuita, has written to us to say he will not be a candidate,” said Mr Odhiambo.

It is not clear if the Party officials were involved in the decision.

The party leadership has been consolidating its support by wooing independent candidates to drop their bids and support Jubilee candidates.

This comes just a few days after President Uhuru Kenyatta prevailed upon Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua who lost the Jubilee nominations to quit the race.

The former PS was key in lobbying for African countries to pull out of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
