13 Swing Counties Where Raila Odinga Lost Huge Support

Prior to the August General Election, 13 counties had been identified as swing vote regions.

The 13 counties; Nairobi, Bungoma, Garissa, Isiolo, Kajiado, Kisii, Marsabit, Narok, Nyamira, Samburu, Trans Nzoia, Turkana, and Wajir were marked as the counties that would determine  Kenya's, next president.

So far, the provisional results show that President Uhuru Kenyatta is leading in seven of the counties whereas Opposition Leader Raila Odinga will win in six.

Despite winning in six of these swing counties, Mr Odinga lost tremendous support in all the 13 counties as compared to the 2013 elections.

In Bungoma County, President Kenyatta gained 60,000 new votes and cut Mr Odinga's lead by almost half.

2013: Uhuru- 42,998  Raila 185, 419.

2017 Uhuru- 122, 100 Raila 278, 901.

In Trans Nzoia County, Uhuru gained 30,000 new votes closing the gap between him and Odinga to around 20,000.

2013: Uhuru- 74, 466 Raila- 92,035.

2017: Uhuru- 106,409 Raila - 127, 042.

President Kenyatta turned tables in Nyamira County beating Mr Odinga with over 10,000 votes.

2013: Uhuru- 54,071, Raila 121,59.

2017: Uhuru- 100,658, Raila 89, 638.

Kisii County saw Uhuru gaining widely as compared to the past election. In 2017, Raila got 210,305 votes while Uhuru managed 163,928. In the 2013 elections, Raila had 236,831 while Uhuru got 95,596 votes.

Garissa County had Uhuru winning with 43,943 votes against Raila’s 41,597. In the 2013 elections, Raila won with 44,724 while Uhuru got 41,672.

In Samburu, Raila lost massive support garnering 30,411 votes against Uhuru’s 30,406. In the 2013 election, Raila managed 31,086 votes in the county while Uhuru had 22,085. 

The tally from Nairobi had Raila emerging the winner with 809,298, while Uhuru managed 766,449 votes. During the 2013 elections, Raila won 691,156 votes against Uhuru’s got 659,490 votes.

Although Raila won the city battle, Uhuru’s votes increased by over 100,000 compared to 2013.

In Turkana, Uhuru gained over 14,000 to garner 44,692 votes against Raila's 56,614. In the 2013 elections, Raila had 68,402 while Uhuru managed 30,235 votes. 

Wajir County, Uhuru won with 48,341 against Raila’s 41,837. In 2013, Raila beat Uhuru in the county, garnering 49,712 votes against Uhuru’s 38,927 votes.

In Narok, Uhuru won with 140,903 votes against Raila’s 122,126. In the 2013 poll, Raila led in the county with 118,623 against Uhuru’s 109,413.

Results from Marsabit County indicate that Uhuru scooped 86,222 votes against Raila’s 14,932 votes. In 2013, Raila had 43,843 while Uhuru got 42,407 votes. The results indicate that Uhuru managed to win and increase his tally by more than 40,000.
