Drones Set to be Introduced In Nairobi to Monitor Parking Areas

The Nairobi County Government is set to introduce drones fitted with cameras in the city to monitor the payment of parking fees.

Jambopay, the company behind Nairobi's digital payments platform, has unveiled plans to deploy drones to monitor compliance with parking regulations and payments in the capital.

In a letter to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the company has sought permission to import commercial drones to aid in the enforcement of parking revenue collection.

Danson Muchemi, Jambopay's Chief Executive Officer, stated that they have developed an aerial imagery compliance data-gathering module that will use the gadgets to collect parking compliance data.

He further explained that the drones would fly across parking areas in the city twice every day and relay data back to their servers.

The information will then be sent to the County Parking Department for appropriate measures to be taken, including the clamping down of vehicles.

Governor Mike Sonko had announced plans to maximize revenue collections in Nairobi as a key element of his agenda to improve service delivery.

Poor enforcement has been blamed for losses of up to Sh18 Million a month in parking revenues.

Governor Sonko last week made a tweet decrying lost revenue through corrupt parking attendants.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) last year came up with regulations for the use of drones in Kenya. Among the rules was a cap on the maximum height for flying drones which was set at 400 feet above the ground, with those who need to fly higher having to seek operational licences.
