Environment CS Judi Wakhungu Bans Plastic Bottles in Karura Forest

Environment Cabinet Secretary Judi Wakhungu has banned the use of plastic bottles in Karura Forest, Nairobi.

The CS stated that Kenyans visiting the park will not be allowed past the gate with their drinking water.

Prof Wakhungu stated that the prohibition would be extended to all other protected areas and forests to rid them of plastics.

She noted that the ban applies to polyethylene, terephthalate disposable water bottles commonly used by bottlers adding that visitors were allowed to carry heavy duty reusable plastic bottles.

The CS stated that the government would soon ban disposable plastic bottles nationally, adding that discussions with manufacturers and recyclers were underway.

"At the Karura gate, you will be asked to declare any plastics you have with you. And if you have any you will be asked to put it in a container provided at the gate," Prof Wakhungu stated.

"That way we will ensure that visitors will not litter the forest when they leave," she added.

The Karura ban was introduced by the Friends of Karura Group immediately after the plastic ban last month.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) warned that those violating the plastic paper bag ban risked Sh4 Million fine or a two-year jail term.
