Police Warn of Fresh Attacks in 3 Counties

Police have warned that Al Shabaab militants might be planning fresh attacks in Lamu and a number of surrounding counties.

Lamu County commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo stated that militants belonging to Jaysh Ayman, an Islamist insurgent group with links to Al Shabaab could be planning attacks.

He asked residents to report any suspicious activities because members of the militant group had been spotted in Ijara sub-county in Garissa.

“Jaysh Ayman movements have been spotted in Ijara side. We cannot sit and wait until when the militants strike and kill again, we are calling upon members of the public to give information that will assist us to strike their base,” stated Mr Kitiyo.

The Jaysh Ayman comprises of Kenyan and foreign jihadists and has been terrorising residents of Lamu, Tana River and Garissa since 2014.

The group was also said to be behind the 2014 massacre at Mpeketoni in which led to the deaths of almost 70 people.

Intelligence reports indicate the attacks might be carried out on Christmas Day, December 31 and on New Year’s day.

Recently, media reports indicated that a Kenyan, who rose through the Al-Shabaab ranks to become one of its commanders, in charge of foreign fighters, was on the run after falling out with his colleagues.

It was alleged that Iman was not happy with the killing of Muslims in Northeastern Kenya by Al-Shabaab and the execution of Kenyan members of the group for allegedly spying for the African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom).

The militia group recently executed a number of people over spying allegations in front of an entire village.
